Introduction

Are you a student of Industrial Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Technical Computer Science, Embedded systems engineering or a similar field and are you looking for an interesting and challenging research assignment? The Engineering, Quality & Process Development department of VMI is looking for an intern to start in September 2024 or February 2025 to complete a research assignment. In this assignment, you will investigate the question: ‘How should VMI approach version control of machine control software?’.

Department

Your internship will take place in the Engineering, Quality & Process Development department, where you will be part of a team of 17 employees. The culture on this department is open and friendly. Here you will closely collaborate with the two Control Software Coordinators and you will have the opportunity to meet colleagues of other engineering departments as well.

What are you going to do?

You will answer the following question through research: ‘How should VMI approach version control of machine control software?’.

The world of PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) is moving closer and closer towards the world of application software engineering where GIT (Global Information Tracker) is the standard to do version control. There is a big overlap between the two worlds, but there are also major differences. What can we learn from that? Can we apply the same principles? There are multiple tools in the market to support version control for PLCs, but which one is the most suitable? You can do a deep dive into this topic and advise us the best option to shape the future with.

The following tasks are included:

  • Search for the several available tools in the market;
  • Investigate fit for PLC domain, organization and way of working;
  • Broader view: are there any other (technical) benefits that we’re missing out on?;
  • Create a demo-environment where you:
  • demonstrate a workflow for the machine standard maintenance;
  • demonstrate a workflow for creating customer order projects;
  • demonstrate a workflow for library management;
  • Conclude and advice.

Who are you?
  • You are an hbo/wo student in Industrial Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Technical Computer Science, Embedded systems engineering or similar;
  • Next to your good technical skills, you are a sociable person;
  • You are currently in the 3rd or 4th year of your studies;
  • You are looking for an internship of 32 to 40 hours per week. For this internship, it is possible to be working partly at home on the assignment.
What do we offer?

We give you the opportunity to join an open and friendly team for six months. You will have the opportunity to carry out challenging research in which you can add real value to the organization. For this internship you will receive an internship allowance and a travel allowance.

In addition to our own internship program, you will have the opportunity to participate in a Master Class at Perron038.

These Masterclasses are organized each time by different companies and relate to soft skills, but can for example also be about LinkedIn, project management and job application tips.

VMI is one of the partners at innovation center Perron038 in Zwolle. Various technical companies work together here in the field of Technology and they share knowledge and experiences with each other in an inspiring environment. At the training sessions & Tuesday afternoon drinks at Perron038 you will also meet students from the other companies in the region. Want to know more about Perron038? Lees verder
