Stage

Introduction

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Mechanical Engineering student. The assignment is to conduct research into alternative materials for the drum in the Brake Unit of the Creel, which can withstand higher temperatures and speeds.

The Creel is a machine used in the production of tires and other rubber products. It is a kind of frame or rack that holds the steel cords or wires in place during the production process. The Brake Unit is a component of the Creel that regulates the tension of the steel cords during the production process. The drum is a component of the Brake Unit that holds the steel cords in place and regulates the tension.

Department

VMI R&D offers an enthusiastic and inspiring working environment. VMI R&D has a lot of facilities for doing tests and collect data.

You will be working in the R&D Extrusion Cutters & Flexx department with 23 colleagues. This group consists of 9 Mechanical Engineers, 8 Control Engineers, 2 Electrical Engineers, a Release Engineer, 2 Technical Projectleaders and a trainee.

What are you going to do?

An essential part of the Creel is the patented Brake Unit. By this unit the steel cord tension of all the steel cords in the Unixx Belt Maker is kept into an equal level during production at different speeds. The drum is an ejection moulded part and has a constant friction on the brake belt. Because of the friction, an increase on temperature of the drum occurs when the speed raises. Because of the temperature limits of the drum the max speed is limited.

Your goal will be to identify a material that can replace the current drum material and enable higher speed and temperature performance.

You will work on the following tasks: (can be revised in consultation with you)

  • Determine the current speed/temperature limits by testing
  • Conduct a feasibility study for other materials
  • Build a prototype and test the new material
  • Evaluate the performance of the new material and report the results
Who are you?
  • A Mechanical Engineering student (bachelor or master)
  • A specialization in Materials Technology or a similar specialization is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently
  • You are looking for an internship from September or February
  • You are available for at least 5 months, for 32 to 40 hours per week. It is possible to work on the assignment partly from home.

What do we offer?

We give you the opportunity to join a cozy team for at least 5 months. You will have the opportunity to carry out challenging research in which you can add real value to the organization. For this internship you will receive an internship allowance that you can expect from a leading company and a travel allowance.

In addition to our own internship program, you will have the opportunity to participate in a Master Class at Perron038.

These Masterclasses are organized each time by different companies and relate to soft skills, but can for example also be about LinkedIn, project management and job application tips.

VMI is one of the partners at innovation center Perron038 in Zwolle. Various technical companies work together here in the field of Technology and they share knowledge and experiences with each other in an inspiring environment. At the training sessions & Tuesday afternoon drinks at Perron038 you will also meet students from the other companies in the region. Want to know more about Perron038? Read more
